Impetigo (NHS)

Our impetigo service provides expert support for managing this common, contagious skin infection that causes red sores and crusty patches. We help patients recover safely while reducing the risk of spreading the infection to others.

What to consider

  • Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection that typically resolves within 7–10 days with treatment. While it can affect people of any age, it is most commonly seen in young children.

  • Impetigo is caused by a bacterial infection, most commonly by Staphylococcus aureus or group A Streptococcus. The infection usually occurs when the skin is broken or damaged, making it easier for bacteria to enter and cause symptoms.

  • Impetigo usually starts with red, itchy sores or blisters. These may burst and form golden-brown crusty patches.

  • After a consultation with one of our pharmacists, if treatment is suitable and you meet the necessary criteria, you may be offered medication to help clear the infection. Options include:

    • Hydrogen Peroxide Cream – for treating localized, non-bullous impetigo

    • Antibiotic Cream – such as fusidic acid for mild, non-bullous cases

    • Antibiotic Tablets, Capsules, or Oral Solution – for more widespread infections

If you are prescribed a medication, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you qualify for free prescriptions.

If the pharmacy treatment isn’t appropriate, or you don’t meet the criteria, the pharmacist will suggest alternative treatments or refer you to another service.
